I just turned over 50,000 on my 2004 SY `Puto`. The BFG KDWs are all worn, so I put on a set of Firestone WOs. They look great and hook real well, better than the KDWs ever did.
Unfortunately my `Puto` starting ticking. She only ticks when she is cold. Ater she warms up, the tick goes away.
Maybe it isn't the tick, but it sounds like ticking and it speeds up as the motor revs faster and it is loud.
It's too late for waranty work... mods, miles
Has anyone got the tick with this many miles? Has it been your experience that it goes away after the motor warms up?
I know there are some looong tick posts here and I have read a lot of them, but I do not remember seeing anything about an Mach getting the tick after 50K miles or that the tick only happens when the motor is warming up.
I have not heard of anyone having the tick:rant: start after so many miles...of course, I also don't know of anyone that has turned 50k yet.... :allhail:
The tick happens after the engine is hot, and you can only hear it at idle. I'm thinking maybe you have problems with the timing chain tensioners...

YIKES!
It is a sound like hitting a bottle with a screwdriver. a short sharp sound that is steady at idle and speeds up as the engine revs... I don't understand how a tensioner could make that noise, but I have a lot of respect for your opinion Hawk. I guess I better take to to the dealer to get it checked right away.
Anybody know of a Dealer with a good, mod friendly service dept in Austin? I closest to Covert on 183.
well, dude, I appreciate the sentiment, but I am no expert. I just know how my tick is. And considering several people have had issues with the chain tensioners, I thought that sounded more likely than the tick (caused by loose valve guides, by the way).
I think taking it to someone with experience with these motors is a damn fine idea. That may be the dealer, or it may be a shop that specializes in 'stangs. Since you are out of warranty, take your pick.
Sorry man, either way, it sucks when yer pony is sick. :(

Well the noise stopped. Then it came back. Then it seems to have went away all together. It only made noise when the motor was cold, so it was not much of a nuisance, but it was worrysome.
So what was it? I had just changed my oil when it began. Coincidence?
Over the last few months I haven't driven the car much and rarely rev over 4k. So I decided that after it warmed up and the noise stopped I would blow the soot out. I took it out and ran it through the gears up to redline several times.
Since then no more noise. Even the release bearing stopped squeaking.
Was my Mach just in need of a work out?

hehe, sounds that way! Glad it is back to quietly stomping chevys!

The sound could be a crudded up fuel injector with the miles on the clock. Nailing the accelerator could have cleaned-up the injector somewhat. I would run a bottle or two of Techron through the tank and give the injectors a good cleaning. Techron costs more because it's worth it. My 2¢

Was my Mach just in need of a work out?No coincidence. My guess is you had an oil filter with a recalcitrant bypass valve. Running it up to redline and the resultant higher oil pressure may have split the filter element or popped open the bypass allowing normal oil flow at idle.
Just a tip for everyone. No matter what kind of car, if you change the oil and the engine starts making noises it didn't before hand. Take off the filter and chunk it in the trash and try a new one. There are a lot of quality issues out there with oil filters these days and brand is not a guarantee that it won't happen to you.

That is very true. Many filters coming off the line at factories are not what they use to be its called greed and little quality control.

Wow thats crazy! Glad it worked out for you though. I wonder if that would help my gf's '96 GT with 118k on it to stop :thud: ha ha jk!

it came back... sounds like a Stephen King story. heh... :457:
this time it is obvious what the problem is. it is the serpentine belt tensioning wheel. when i listened before, somehow i wasn't able to pinpoint the sound. it is impossible not to hear it where it comes from now. when i first crank her up i get that tick like noise along with a screeching noise from the same place.
after driving at about 50 for a few miles the noise stops and stays gone until the car cools down all the way... like overnight.
i listened through a paper tube to try and isolate it, then i pushed on the tensioner with a smail piece of hardwood. that altered the sound and if i pushed it to a certain point, the noise dissappeared.
so next week i will get a replacement tensioner and swap it out.
has anybody done this? it looks simple, but hey, doesn't hurt to ask.. right?

just to follow up....
I replaced the belt tensioner. That was it. It was really making a lot of noise. Even when it wasn't screaming it was making less intrusive noises. The difference is night and day.
Crazy how it had to start making a ticking noise to get my attention.
Just shows to go ya... nothing replaces being there and doing that. Thanks for all the cyber diagnosesis.... that a word?
You know what? I love the ORG  Oh, 52K and climbing.
Long live `Puto` the SY Mach1.
I have recently seen in my nieghborhood: Oxford White Mach, Azure Blue Mach, Zinc Yellow Mach and FORE SALE AT A USED CAR LOT..... a TR MACH.
they is everwear!!!
Glad ya got the problem fixed. 52K awesome.. These cars are def made to be driven :allhail:
