Hey everyone. I have an 04 Mach with about 12400 miles on it. I bought the car a little over a month ago. About a couple weeks ago I started to notice the dreaded tick, which I have searched and read about all over the place. When the car is at idle, there is no noticible tick. However when I shift from second to third, fourth, fifth, at low rpms and give her some gas, the tick is very loud and the harder i hit the gas the louder it is. When I let off the gas or gear down, no sound. Id like to say it is an exhaust leak? The sound is coming from the passenger floorboard it sounds like and it is really beginning to annoy the hell outta me! Thanks for hearing me out on a familiar topic. Please lemme know your thoughts, ?'s etc. Thanks again!

just a guess, but that sounds like exhaust leak, not the tick. the tick is heard at idle and not so much at higher rpm. Exhaust leak is minor in comparison.

'03's had the tick, not '04's. Different heads, better coolent flow, no tick. You have bigger problems. :thud:

The sound you hear is most likely exhaust gases exiting at the driver's side manifold/h-pipe flange. The connection may be loose - or...

The precat faces may have blinded.

I had a similar noise on Max the Mach; when I pulled the H-pipe to swap the trans, I noticed the precat matrix had partially melted, causing the face of the cat to blind (gases can't get thru the cat efficiently. This causes a buildup of backpressure at high loads/revs, which can 'leak' out at the flange.

I simply buzzed out the precats, and the problem went away.

Oh - '04 motors can (and do) tick, BTW.

thought it might be the drive train lash issue, but it would do it when ya get off the gas as well. what mods if any do you have? i think all over head cam motors tick a bit, but how bad is the key.

All I have is flowmasters and K&N. Thanks for all the responses. It is the loudest and most noticible when I am in say 3rd and the rpms are around 1200 or so and I give it gas. When I let off the gas, nothing but exhaust. What would be the best way to find it and take care of it?

I don't believe you have the famous tick problem. The engine in my "04" was replaced because of the tick. The only time I heard it was at idle.

All, I think LenMach1 bought my Mach, I had the whole exhaust welded up from Cats back, that engine had no tick and ran like a raped ape.

Ah the car had JBA headers installed. Could this be the leak problem??

possible, they were torqued at the 500 mile mark and that was at about 3000 miles ago.
