They have finally shown the production Dodge Charger at the Detroit Auto Show. I'm sorry but IMHO they have mucked up another classic car. For one it's a four door. It will have the 340HP Hemi engine in it, but then so did the GTO.

I don't mind that it's a four door (I like the Marauder), I just don't like the body style. With the exception of the Viper, there's nothing that interests me from Dodge.

IMHO..it's fughly :( Another thing is...when you open the hood...there's this big engine cover..it says Hemi...Now as an ex owner of a 70 Hemi Cuda...the first thing that jumps out at ya when you open the hood of a Hemi car is those big Valve covers!!!! Dodge really missed the boat on this one...4 doors and a plastic Hemi engine cover...What next...a Challenger Neon ...Oh they already have that.... :lmao:

I work at a Dodge dealership in the service department so I look at them every day. I can't say much for the styling but the Hemi is a very impressive engine. The coil packs and two set of plug wires spoil the apperance of it, so thats why it has a plastic cover.

As for the Challeger, there is one coming out. It will have two doors, a completely new body style and an available 6.1 liter Hemi with 425 hp (see the SRT 300C). Rear wheel drive and all. Coming soon to a Dodge dealership near us. Definately NOT a Neon.

As for the Neon SRT-4. I was interested in one before I bought the Mach, but I drove one and it is a joke. Not bad I guess fot $19k, but not a real performance car. The SRT-10 truck on the other hand.......

...I guess from a modern stand point it's kinda OK...but I'm from the Stone Age when Chargers were...well Chargers...LOL..!!! Not a 4 door grocery getter...LOL..!!! There was a time...not sooo long ago when you could go into a Mopar dealer and get anything you wanted to make you Chysler, Plymouth, Dodge go fast.....Favorites Mopars from that era:

1.> 1970 Hemi Cuda
2.> 1966 Plymouth Satellite Hemi
3.> 1970 AAR Cuda (340 Six Pack)
4.> 1970 Dodge Challenger Hemi
5.> 1970 Challenger T/A (340 Six Pack)
6.> 1968 Hemi Dart
7.> 1968-69 Dodge Dart GTS 340/440
8.> 1970-72 Plymouth Duster 340
9.> 1970 Cuda 440 Six Pack

Ahhh yeah...remember it like it was yesterday...LOL..!!!!! The Neon HP wise...is pretty good...had one at a dyno day post over 220 RWHP!!! And I have seen pixs of the SRT 300...still not my cup of tea...but it's good to see the performance coming back alive...that is good for all makes IMHO!!

By joke, I don't mean not powerful, it's just too much like a bland, boring econobox, but with some power. The steering, clutch, shifter are all just, well, NEON.

Any idea when?

I'm waiting for the next Cobra, but if it hits $40K I'm looking at alternatives.

My techs given details on the car and shown pictures when they went to school in 2004 for the Magnum/300 vehicles. From the time I saw the first spy photos of the Charger until now was about six months and it is still a couple of months away. So my best guess is late 2005.

I figure if the SRT 300C is less than $40k, this Dodge will be about $35k all the way out. Sounds like a good SWAG to me.

I can't believe that's it..... :(

I saw the prototype and I liked it a lot and what the hell is this crap. Dodge should hire me as well as Chevy as a consultant I can tell them what people want. NOt this crap.

Its a ok car, for a certain market of people, like lawyers :lmao: But why oh why call it a charger??? I just don't understand what they are thinking by doing this to classic cars, the same with the GTO if they had just called it a GT Grand Am or something else anything else.

God that is ugly!

I agree with ya tach, hiding the valve covers and all. The engine bay misses something when they do that.

Too many of the old cars are getting ruined by yuppy designers. Not that I was ever a huge MOPAR guy or anything like that, I still liked the looks of the Charger as well as the original GTOs. These cars are getting ruined.

Lets not forget the Chevy Malibu, that used to be a sweet ride, now its another 4-dorr grocery getter(thanx tach:beer:)

Well, it depends on how they market them. I didn't think we would sell any Magnums either, but we can't keep them in stock.

For over 25 years, I was a diehard Mopar man. I have owned 8 Chargers and many other Mopars, but when Dodge showed the concept Charger 4 or 5 years ago, I wanted one. At that time, I was a master technician in a large Dodge dealership, so I approached the general manager about the concept being built. He told me that not only was it going to be built, but the first one received by the dealership would be mine if I wanted it. Somewhere between concept and production, Dodge lost all of the styling cues that make a Charger a Charger. Guess whats sitting in my driveway now?
That's right, a 2004 Mach 1. First new car for me, though I have bought several for my wife, and I have to say that I'm thoroughly impressed with what Ford has done with the Mustang. If Dodge wants any more business from me, they will have to remember where they came from.

I grew up in the muscle car era, and even though I'm Ford blue through and through, I still liked some of the old mopars. Even owned a Challenger for a couple of years back in the mid seventies. Not to flame any mopar people here, but big horsepower or not.....that thing wouldn't make a pimple on a Charger's a$$! :lmao:

When I first saw the prototype about 2+ years ago I was allllllllllllllllll for it!! I thought it was freakin' awesome, even though they had a possible plan to make it run on natural gas :034: I thought the body and "power" it was supposed to have was going to be hot...glad I decided on the Mach-1
