hey guys, i'm new here. i picked a used 03 mach 1 yesterday. i got the 5 speed one...
anyways, i bought a set of frpp 4.10 gears today alone with a dm speedcal.
can i install the gears only and later on add the stronger axels ????
i won't be doing drag racing at all
Thanks

The thing is...if you're gonna put in gears, there is no more real added labor for installig axels or and diff...so you can save some labor time.... IMHO

The rear end questions seem to be coming in on a daily basis now, haha. We should have a designated rear end thread that stays at the top, but of course it would grow out of hand.
I have much less experience than tach9 does, but I'm going to mention that I agree with him anyhow. If you're going to open the rear end up for any kind of upgrade, then it's in your best interest to go all the way--new axles, new differential, and new gears. You will also need all of the small goodies like a shim kit, a master bearing setup kit, and all the fluids and greases.
For axles, a lot of members have been going with Moser. Some of us have had to space brake calipers on the driver's side to make everything fit. Some members have spaced brake calipers on both sides. The posts on axles really seem to vary a lot. I've read success stories about Strange axles also.
When it comes to the differential, I would recommend spending a bit more on a clutchless unit, such as a Zexel Torsen or a Detroit True-Trac. Clutchless differentials are maintenance-free and do not loosen up over time.
When it comes to gears, go with FRPP. I think most members would agree with me on this one.
Take my advice with a grain of salt as I'm only reporting what I have read and what I have been told. I am not speaking from experience, yet.
Good luck!

Its best to do the change all at one time but as long as you don't use slicks and are easy on your 410's you should be ok.

save your $$$ and do it all at one time. I was going to wait myself until i wore out my stock differential and the mechanic told me i was an idiot. Especially when i had already purchsed the eaton w/ 31s axles. So now, the entire enchelada will be replaced.
BTW, i have a stock differential, axles and gears for CHEAP. only 2500 miles on them, never at the track yet but often tested for integrity. Catch me on a good day, i'll give it away...

Lonestar, this certainly is true....but here's my philosophy :D I look at things as a complete system...so let's take a look at the rear end. OK ya want gears, so let's slap some 4:10's in there...now that we have it all apart, what makes up that rear end, AND...WHY are we putting in gears in the first place? ...PERFORMANCE!!!! Thus as a system, the rear end consists of gears. axels, diff etc...so why not make the system a performance one since that is the reason we put gears in the first place? Like those of us that have had a stereo system bug....your system is only as good as it's weakest component...same goes for the rear end.....FWIW....
someone tell me what fwiw means plz

Thank you guys for all the advice

It's what your mom says when you hand her a bag of dirty underwear to wash - "Fwiw, musicman, that is some stinky underwear!" Also spelled phew, fwew, and a few other ways...
oh i'm a moron i thought it was like a imo imho thing

There's a thread on the registry where joe (itlrun) says that even though he is a frpp dealer (apparently the frpps are made by strange), he recommends moser. I don't recall remarks about superior.
thread (http://www.mach1registry.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26671)
second thread (http://www.mach1registry.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26664)
another thread (http://www.mach1registry.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26370)
It does seem like many people have had to shim their calipers with the mosers (which I don't get - Why is it so hard to cut axles to the right length?) but they don't seem to have breakage problems. I'm trying to keep an eye on this topic, since I want to build my rear end too. And I haven't figured it out yet, so good luck and post what you find/select/install!

Good advice. Pertains to rest of car as well. Mod it for how it is going to be used. You don't put stiff lowering springs for handling on car for drag strip use etc. You don't run 4.30's on car whose primary use is long distance travel, etc You don't run 18" wheels/tires if you drive on pot hole roads, etc

I live and die on the "complete system" why just buy a catback and not do midpipe and headers? or a maf meter and not a cia and a throttle body?
When i do buy and install my SC im doing everything, to make sure I don't have any "what if's"
man i cant wait for spring

With everything (for me) is a cobra fuel tank, twin cobras fuel pumps, at least 42 lb fuel injectors ,a new fuel rail, an intake,Tb, MAF, new ingnition system and a good tune. Bt I only plan on running 10 lbs of boost the p-1sc. but everything means something else to different ppl. If ya want to go more boost I'd reccomend a bottom end rebuild. I'm going to try to find a alum. 4.6 block and start building it now. (just in case :hehe:)

Good Plan...You may consider Cobra injectors and meter..A lot of Cobra's upgrade when they add larger blower and boost,They are easy to tune and should do well with 10lb setup...

So has anyone seen an ET/MPH improvement with a relatively stock Mach with 4:10's on street tires at the track? I'm wondering if it would help on street tires or provide too much torque? Thoughts?
