Hello all, I have heard rumors that in addition to having a cobra power plant that we also have forged pistons and rods. I don't really believe it, but anyone with information regarding this would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Shaun:D

the 5 speed has a forged crank but not sure about the pistons or rods

The manuals have a forged crank, nothing else.
The autos have a cast crank.

Thank you for the info...I was asking because I've been thinking about boost applications.

Well, with regard to boost, we also have a compression ratio that is a bit on the high side for a boosted application...

I agree, but there are lots of machs nowadays running turbos and blowers, and they are doing great. Of course time will tell, but high compression engines have been doing this for a long time. I've heard the LS1 engines have high compression as well and do great with boost.
I guess it's all in the tune.....

Lots of Machs? Hmmm... The only ones I have seen are few and far between and are usually a tuner car- There are no "mainstream" kits made for our cars yet. I saw where a Vortech kit for a 2001 Cobra was grafted onto a Mach, but I am not so sure that your statement is totally accurate. No flames here, just would like to see more results.

You are 100% correct about tune, no question. I do have a little blower experience, and with regard to the Mach-1 engine, there are 2 strikes against it- the pistons are brittle and the compression is a bit on the high side. What this means is, yes, with a proper tune you could see some tremendous results, however the margin for error is VERY small as far as detonation or leanout. If you make a mistake in tune, or perhaps get some bad gas, you could have a pretty expensive meltdown on your hands. Yes lots of LS-1's have boost, but a lot of them pop the shortblock and end up going to a forged 383 or other alternative.
This is something I have seen up close. I am a member of MFBA (Midwest F-Body Association) Forums, lots of them race at GLD, which is close to Chicago. Have known of at least 4 people who went to blower or the twin turbo system and their motors did not last very long, although they went pretty damn fast while it was running... :D

I'd be more inclined to run a small N20 kit on mine before I'd go to a boosted setup...

actually procharger has a mach specific kit out as we speak and I believe paxton is making one too. I know one or two turbo companies have fab'ed a kit for us as well.
A guy that I'm friends with that does blowers left and right says with our setup he wouldn't do anymore than 6-8 psi. I believe I'm going to wait for the warranty to expire before I go that route.
Hell I'm half tempted to yank the motor out and go all forged, but then that kinda hurts the collector value as well. (Like a blower doesn't in the first place huh? :D )
I know of a top secret setup that was just completed.....
breathes exclusively through the shaker....we'll see what happens

Top secret huh? You mean you wouldn't share it with your fellow Mach 1 chronies?? LOL I might be inclined to do a nitrous setup...I'm just wanting to close the gap up a bit on the competition out there. I had a heck of an experience at 4 am last week on the way to work with a Camaro. We ran tight for a little while and then I finally got him. Scared me a bit...

Got him in the end though:fnger:
